BIRD FEEDERS
THEY MAY BE HAZARDOUS
TO YOUR HEALTH …
It is our professional opinion that the presence
of bird feeders can invite unwanted squirrel activity,
as well as, mice or rat feeding problems. In addition,
the fecal matter (left behind by birds, stray animals,
and rodents) contains harmful bacteria which can
cause disease, and also attracts insects which can
lead to unwanted infestations.
For instance birds contaminate structures with
their droppings, particularly in areas used for
roosting sites. Their droppings can contain a variety
of disease causing bacteria, fungi, and nematodes.
Birds are considered one of the major carriers of
several viral encephalitic diseases. In addition,
numerous blood-feeding parasitic mites associated
with birds can bite humans. The first step toward
control is to remove their source of food, water
and protection.
Rodents are also associated with various diseases.
Leptospirosis is vectored by rats, as well as, mice
and is a disease of great concern. This disease
is acquired by eating food and drinking water which
are polluted with infected rat urine. Rats also
often bite and can also cause significant structural
damage and product destruction. The deer mouse is
the principle rodent species associated with the
transmission of the hantavirus through the inhalation
of matter which is contaminated by the droppings
and urine of infected mice. Exclusion is a critical
aspect in rodent control and begins with the elimination
of their source for food, water and materials which
provide harborage areas.
