SQUIRRELS
The Eastern Gray squirrel varies in color from redish
gray to gray to black. The gray squirrel varies
in length from 14 to 21 inches and from ¾
to 1 ½ pounds. Gray squirrels are early risers
and leave their nests with the first light of day.
Gray squirrels breed twice a year, generally mid
winter usually late December or early January and
late spring May to early July with a gestation period
of 42 to 45 days, usually three to six young per
litter, but two or three are most common. Squirrels
are prolific chewers and will enter homes by chewing
through wood trim, vinyl and aluminum. Once inside
causing considerable damage to insulation, structure
and wiring plus possible health related problems
due to nesting materials and feces.
Gray squirrels are vulnerable to numerous parasites
and diseases. Ticks, mites and fleas are common
and can enter homes and become a nuisance for homeowners
when they leave the host animal.
