SPIDERS
You can buy paper or plastic ones in stores. People
love to use them to decorate and create an eerie
atmosphere to go along with their ghosts and goblins.
A few creative types eagerly spend hours weaving
intricate replicas of their trapping devices from
thread or rope. TV cartoonists and comic books have
even created a “super-hero” capable
of duplicating a few of their amazing feats. That’s
right, arachnophobia eliminators, we’re talking
about spiders! October should be proclaimed Spider
Month! We put thoughts of these little creatures
into everybody’s mind with the spooky season
and reinforce it by invasion into homes of the real
thing from their outdoor summer retreats.
Control of the little beneficial buggers is not
such an easy task as picking up the little plastic
replica and storing it in a box ‘til next
Halloween. Spiders are predators and require prey
to survive. Whenever you find a large spider infestation
it usually indicates a healthy population of some
other insect being used for fodder for the spiders.
In fact, one effective control method for spiders
is to eliminate their live food source. A thorough
inspection outside the building as well as inside
must be done to determine the infestation level,
locations and other factors contributing to their
survival. Night inspections may be required because
of the nocturnal habits of many spiders. Glue boards
and traps can also be useful in capturing for identification.
Spiders have a preference for seldom disturbed
areas. That’s why you often find webs in high
corner areas. Outdoors, removal of protective cover,
such as debris, stones, blocks, loose bark, wood
piles, etc., is a great help in reducing population
by disrupting their natural habitat. Good housekeeping
is the best deterrent for indoor populations. We
recommend frequent trash removal, dusting and vacuuming
and the removal of old boxes, clothing and clutter
in closets, attics, and storage areas. Thorough
Spring and Fall house cleaning is a must for homes
with frequent spider infestations.
Chemical control is varied and different approaches
may be required, depending on the particular type
of spider involved. Generally, if spiders are found
in an enclosed area, space sprays or even total
release aerosols, such as Pro Control with Tempo,
are quite effective. In populated areas, most typical
residuals can be used. The key is to get the insecticide
into the out of the way areas which are preferred
by the spider.
One trick which can be used year round, not just
at trick-or-treat time, is to use wettable powders
or dusts directly on the web. Spiders have this
bad habit of eating their own webs. They re-cycle
the silk through their digestive system and that
gives us a good way to get pesticides into their
tummies. One product which offers good results is
Suspend, the new suspended concentrate liquid that
leaves a fine powdery residue. Dusting with Ficam,
Drione or Tempo has also shown to be quite effective.
Perimeter sprays can help prevent inward movement;
we recommend microcaps for duration in the fall
of the year. Remember, not all spiders spin webs.
The commonly found Wolf Spider relies on the hunt
and kill method, so spraying and dusting in protected
areas is the only solution for them.
