STRIPED SKUNK
The skunk is a member of the weasel family and has
short, stocky legs with large feed equipped with
well-developed claws for digging. Characterized
by white stripes that run down its back, its fur
is otherwise jet black. Skunks become a nuisance
when burrowing under structures for dening or feeding
around garbage cans and pet food left outside. Their
odor is not always an indication of their presence.
Adult skunks begin breeding in late February and
young are born around May. There is generally 1
litter per year usually consisting of 4 to 6 young.
The skunks life expectancy is approximately 3 years
in the wild. Generally nocturnal in habit, they
are slow moving but have great confidence in defending
themselves. Rabies is always a possible risk factor,
and situations should always be handled with care.
