MICE AND RATS
Mice
The most common of all animals in homes. The house
mouse is a small, slender rodent with a pointed
nose, small black protruding eyes and hairless tail.
Generally grayish brown the mouse is very curious
and will investigate everything it encounters. The
house mouse will “nibble” on small portions
continually through the day, spreading feces and
urine as they go. Although not very destructive,
their droppings and the parasites they carry can
transmit diseases to humans. Mice damage is usually
confined to insulation and ceiling tiles
Rats
Numerous species are present in NJ. They are prolific
in producing offspring. At times creating large
populations in one dwelling. Rats are able to chew
through most building materials including concrete.
A tenacious animal that has been known to attack
humans without being provoked.
The Norway rat is a stocky burrowing rodent averaging
approximately one pound. The color is brownish to
reddish gray above with whitish gray on the belly.
Rats will eat nearly any type of food and can chew
through almost anything to get to it. The litters
of 6 to 12 young are born 21 to 23 days after conception,
multiplying rapidly.
