RACCOONS
The Raccoon is a stock mammal approximately two
to three feet long, weighing ten to thirty pounds.
It is distinctively marked with a prominent black
“Mask” over the eyes and a heavily furred
ringed tail. The animal is salt and pepper gray
and black, although some look washed with yellow.
Breeding mainly in February or March with a gestation
period of approximately sixty-three days, most litters
are born in April or May. The typical litter size
is three to five. Raccoons adapt quickly to changing
environments and are nocturnal by nature. The raccoon
is a very strong and agile animal. A high percent
of raccoons carry the rabies virus and will defend
their area and young aggressively against humans
or pets.
Raccoons have a tendency in suburban areas to invade
and nest in attics, crawlspaces and chimney’s
to give birth and raise their young. Raccoons are
nocturnal by nature.
