RABBITS
Overgrown ditches, bushy fence rows, or brush piles
within or near your yard or garden may be major
factors contributing t the presence of rabbits.
Mowing, brush cutting and general cleanup of overgrown
areas and brush piles may be all that is needed
for rabbit control.
The best protection from rabbit damage in a garden
is a tight chicken wire fence. One-inch mesh wire
30 inches high is adequate if held firmly upright
by stakes.
Rabbits can be live-trapped, using carrots or apples
as bait, and released in more appropriate territory.
Fruit and other trees can be protected from damage
by making guards of 1/4 inch hardware cloth. These
guards should be formed into cylinders about 2 inches
larger than the diameter of the tree trunk, and
long enough to protect the tree above the depth
of the deepest snow expected. They should also be
anchored in the soil at the base.
Commercial repellents containing Thiram or Ziram
fungicides used for plant diseases are also effective
for rabbits, and should be painted on the areas
of tree trunks to be protected. Other repellents
include blood dust and nicotine. A recent and successful
addition to the market is Repel (Leffingwell Chemical
Co., Brea, CA).
