OPOSSUMS
Opossums prefer environments near streams and swamps.
The opossum is a whitish gray mammal about the size
of a house cat. Its face is long and pointed and
its ears and tail are hairless. They sometimes den
in attics and garages where they make a messy nest,
feeding near garbage cans, pet food, insects and
carrion. The opossum mating season is January to
July and may raise two litters a year with an average
of six young per litter.
Opossums usually live alone having a home range
of 10 to 50 acres, usually active only at night.
When threatened, an opossum may bare its teeth,
growl, hiss, bite or scratch. If these defenses
are not successful, an opossum may play dead. Opossums
are very intelligent animals ranked above dogs in
some learning tests.
