CANADIAN GEESE
Canada Geese, once nearly extinct, have made a
tremendous comeback due to government regulations
in the United States and Canada and their ability
to adapt to heavily populated areas. In the early
1900’s populations were nearly eliminated
by commercial hunting, draining of wetlands and
harvesting of eggs. Government regulations were
a great success in restoring the population. In
fact, the resident Canada Goose population in North
America is estimated to be several million at this
time.
Because of the population explosion conflicts between
humans and geese have become commonplace. Canada
Geese have become a nuisance because of their penchant
for eating turf grasses and leaving large amounts
of droppings behind. Canada Geese are also noisy
and are quite aggressive during nesting season.
They are, not only a nuisance but can also pose
an environmental threat or risk to human health.
Canada Geese pose a real dilemma for property owners
and managers, the geese damage and soil the property
but are protected by government regulations.
The Migratory Bird Treaty Act and state laws protect
Canadian Geese, like all native waterfowl in the
U.S. Under these laws, it is illegal to hunt, kill,
sell, or possess migratory birds or their parts
(feathers, eggs, nests, etc.) except as permitted
by regulations adopted by the secretary of the Interior.
Problems quickly develop when numbers increase as
young birds return to their nesting areas year after
year. This can result in undesirable accumulations
of droppings and feathers, and the fouling of water
and lawns.
