CHIPMUNKS
The Eastern chipmunk, is the squirrel family sciuridae,
which are the order rodents. There are about twenty
species of chipmunks in North America. The only
one in the East is Tamias striatus; the other nineteen
are smaller, are all in the genus Eutamias, and
live in the West.
Eastern chipmunks are reddish brown with one dark
stripe down the center of the back and one white
stripe in between two black stripes on each side.
They are 5 to 6 inches long with a 3 to 4 inch tail
and they weigh 2 ¼ to 4 ½ ounces.
They run with their tails straight up. Females with
young usually live in more complex burrows.
Chipmunks have a nearly insatiable urge to store
food. The food is stored in their burrows and used
to live on through the winter, when they periodically
awake from hibernation.
Chipmunks can have two breeding periods in a year.
The first last from February through April; the
second is in June and July. Chipmunks are generally
referred to as just a nuisance animal.
